The UL Novice Team Shield is an annual competition hosted by University of London Union (ULU) Fencing Club.
The competition is specifically for those students who started fencing within the University of London in the preceding months. The event provides a fun and friendly environment for these novices to get to grips with electric fencing and test their skills against their contemporaries from other colleges.
Competition can be fierce, as the different clubs and their coaches vie to get their hands on the trophy and claim ultimate bragging rights for the year but as with all ULU Fencing events, the competition will be fenced with a fun and friendly atmosphere and there will be an obligatory social afterwards.
The event is foil only and fencing takes place in teams of 3 plus an optional reserve with matches being Italian relays to 45 hits. Precise details of the format depend on entry numbers, but in the past it has been either a poule unique or rounds of poules followed by Direct Elimination bouts. When choosing the format we aim to provide the fencers with as much fencing as possible, so please plan for a full day on the piste.

The competition will be fenced using electric equipment throughout and it is the responsibility of the individual clubs to provide their fencers with safe, working equipment; ULU will not be providing spares.
Fencers do not need BFA membership but equipment must meet BFA safety guidelines for electric fencing: 350N mask, jacket and breeches, 800N plastron and long socks. Fencers are responsible for their own equipment, and fence at their own risk. The organizers accept no responsibility for any personal loss or injury during the competition.
The competition will finish around 6PM.
Coaches and senior members of clubs are invited to assist the novices and help referee.
